Xsens MTi Inertial Sensor Modules
What are Inertial Sensors?
Inertial sensors are sensors based on inertia. These range from MEMS inertial sensors, measuring only a few square mm, up to ring laser gyroscopes which are extremely accurate but can measure 50 cm in diameter.
What is an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU)?
An Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) is a self-contained system that measures linear and angular motion usually with a triad of gyroscopes and triad of accelerometers. An IMU can either be gimballed or strap-down, outputting the integrated quantities of angular velocity and acceleration in the sensor/body frame. They are commonly referred to in literature as the rate-integrating gyroscopes and accelerometers. The quality of the system is not only defined by the sensing elements included in it, but also by the quality of the signal processing pipeline.
Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS)
An AHRS (Attitude and Heading Reference System) provides 3D orientation by integrating gyroscopes and fusing this data with accelerometer data and magnetometer data. With sensor fusion, drift that arises from the integration of gyroscope data is compensated for by reference vectors, namely gravity, and the earth magnetic field.
This results in a drift-free orientation, making an AHRS a more cost effective solution than conventional high-grade IMUs (Inertial Measurement Units) that only integrate gyroscopes and rely on a very high bias stability of the gyroscopes.
GNSS/INS
Xsens designs and develops Attitude and Heading Reference Systems (AHRS). In order to improve the performance of these AHRS systems, an Inertial Navigation System (INS), which uses angular velocity and acceleration data from an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), can be used to compute a relative position over time.
Because the INS provides a relative position with respect to an initial starting point, it will eventually drift from its true position quickly when no external reference is provided. Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) support can be included to provide this reference.
The Xsens on-board sensor fusion algorithm combines all these measurements, ensuring the best performance and the least amount of drift with and without external reference. Through combining GNSS, INS and AHRS techniques that enhance each other, Xsens is able to provide powerful navigation solutions.
Precision Agriculture
Motion Tracking technology for precision agriculture and smart farming.
The technological advances in precision agriculture and smart farming are following each other in a rapid pace. The wide variety of innovations include individual crop fertilization, precision navigation and autonomous food dispensing. In many of these applications, an IMU plays an important role.
